In 1960’s, police and bureaucracy faced another roadblock in the way of controlling law and order when criminals got in agreement with political leaders. Politician’s main aim behind these tie-ups was to utilize their powers to get good results in the elections. In return people belonging to criminal records get a chance to acquire reputable positions in the society and with the support of top politicians, the proceedings of criminal cases against them slowed down.
In the next five years they started contesting for elections on the party ticket mainly in their hometown, where they can easily get votes on account of their muscle power. At the end of the twentieth century it’s hard to find any political party, which was not supporting or entertaining criminals.
Soon after getting into the main stream politics they realizes that to be remain safe and sound they should have to be present in the government at any cost, and that is why, usually before the elections they joined hands with those political parties whose chances of winning the elections are high or they look forward for a hung assembly so that they can contribute their seat in forming the government.
In the beginning of the twenty first century the impact of these elements in politics become so crucial, that winning elections without them seems impossible for many politicians. Today the condition is so worse, that to be remain in the government, these people even being present in the government openly ask for vote on account of being sent to jail if they didn’t get reelected or they might be murdered.
This 30-40 year old process, that is to get in touch with top politicians to get away from the law is now at its peak. Today both the people, who are present in the government and those who controls the system stands at a point where scrutiny of their work is a must, and this menace can only be tackled when the lay man or the voter not only abandoned these criminals but also their protectors from his franchise and send them where they belong.
The elections in Punjab, Uttrakhand and Manipur are over, and elections are in full swing in Uttar Pradesh, and this year elections are to be held in Goa and Himachal Pradesh.
No doubt the election commission has done a praiseworthy job but now it depends upon the ability of the voter, to make their work worth.
