Ridiculously expensive

Commonwealth games are over and the government, in the center, is now preparing for some political games in Bihar, one of the most politically motivated states of India, and wanted to play it with full spirit and interest unlike the games that has brought more criticism than laurels.

After showcasing the world how corrupt we as a nation are and why we should not be trusted when it comes to organizing international events in our country, the prime minister has announced to investigate the level of corruption that has taken place since its inception. Isn’t it something that we are used to and couldn’t rely upon?

The only thing that has to be commended about the games is the kind of performance our athletes have showcased in-spite of the lack of infrastructure at the basic level. But now the big fats in Delhi wants to snatch the credit won by our athletes.

Apart from corruption and ineptitude, there is one more thing in which Delhi CWG 2010 is ahead of any other sporting event in the world. A whooping Rs 70,000 Crore was spent, this figure is half of India’s defense budget for the current financial year. And how can we forget the ridiculously expensive roll of toilet papers, which bring forth how loosely the funds have been misused.

The official figure on expenditure for London Olympics due in 2012 is Rs 35000 crore while the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2006 Melbourne CWG were successfully held on an expenditure of Rs 28000 crore and Rs 5000 crore respectively. There is no doubt that Delhi needed more funds than Beijing, London and Melbourne to organize the event and to match itself with the brilliance of such cities and also the expenditure on infrastructure (other than renovating and building new stadiums) like building roads and flyovers have increased the costs but still the figure is too high. Also, if the government has not overlooked the development needs of Delhi and has spent considerable amount on infrastructure from time to time over the years, this mammoth expenditure could have been lower.

Within the congress in the unlock corners one can heard congress workers praising about the games and their leaders for staging the Asian games and the CWG. With so much of enthusiasm they are sure that their leaders will host the Olympics too. Olympics! Definitely a bigger platform for corruption, is the organizing committee listening?
