Hard to believe

With its remarks over Lord Ram the Archaeological Survey of India has added a new issue as if there is scarcity of issues in India. ASI's report not only increased the illusions but also the tension already in prevalence.

'Setusundaram is a natural creation of sand and rocks and it can’t be given a historical, archaeological and creative importance', this is how the ASI has put forward his opinion. It is a rational outlook; in fact the whole controversy would never have erupted with this professional view. But, ASI has gone a step beyond and stunned the nation by arousing doubt over the existence of Lord Ram on ground of historical presence. There is a need to correct their unfortunate comment to maintain the prestige of truth.

Firstly, it is difficult to uncover the historical facts of most of the world’s greatest religious events especially those, which are buried under the sea of time. It’s not like doing a thesis like researchers did in their PhDs. It is a matter of faith and belief of millions.

Along with Ayodhaya, Jankipuram, Rameshwaram, and Dhanushkoti there are many other historical places in India and Sri Lanka, that are closely associated with the events occurred in Lord Ram’s life.

Today historians are accepting the deep relation between myths and real incidents; therefore myths cannot be called as the creation of imagination (which some section of the society believes) but they are part of reality, even if the proof of their existence were not found.

Secondly, from Valmikis Ramayana and great Tamil creation of Kambh to Tulsidasa immortal poetry in Racharitramanas, the story of Ramayana has been preached and repeated almost in every language in the world. From the birth of Lord Ram, his marriage with Sita, the fourteen year of exile, war with Ravana, to his return to Ayodhya is embedded on the hearts of millions of people across the globe, for them it is as true and real as any other historical event.

In context with Ramayana and Mahabharata, Pt Jawaharlal Nehru in his book “Discovery of India” wrote, “I don’t found any other epic except the two, which casts such a strong and unstoppable effect on the welfare of people”. Coming from ages they are still the essential force for Indians however the ASI thinks otherwise.
